Queens Road Accident Back to the Gallery

At about 11:30 on Thursday, 29 January 2004, the driver of a truck carrying sand down Queens Road, Sea Point, lost control of the vehicle.

Flattened sign posts indicate the path to a crowd gathered at the corner of Regent & Queens Roads in Sea Point.

The truck came to rest across the driveway of a block of flats.

After squashing a pedestrian against the wall of a laundromat, it proceeded to crush a minibus taxi between a pole and the wall.

Rescue workers extracted at least four bodies from the wreck while a pedestrian lay covered on the pavement.

The view from above indicates the confined space in which rescue personnel had to work.

A cloder view shows the truck's path of destruction along the wall, as well as two covered bodies lying inside the driveway.

Once the bodies were removed and helicopters had left, the mangled remains of the minibus taxi could be seen.
