Protech Systems was started in 1988 to meet the need for an honest, affordable service agency of hifi and video appliances. While supplying and installing new equipment, it became obvious that South Africans were paying far too much for imported goods with a minimal choice of locally manufactured items.

This led to custom design assignments for industrial and specialized domestic applications. Protech Systems looked at the viability of designing and building anything not commercially available at an affordable price.

Another technical field fraught with confusion and misguidance is that of computing. We are striving to alter this perception by means of efficient, courteous service.

At Protech Systems, we keep no stocks that need to be sold off and we have no franchise to support. This means that we're free to provide you with a system that suits your individual needs, using only components that we believe in and support. Also, with minimal staff and low overheads, we are able to charge prices fair to both our clients and ourselves.

Gavin & Helen

Since 1996 we have concentrated exclusively on computer orientated projects such as consultation on software solutions, custom hardware supply, network installations and Web design.

Non-permanent positions are filled by eager students and all work is overseen by management.

Gavin began experimenting with electronics while still at school. Early amplifier and loudspeaker designs of his are still operating in clubs and churches around Cape Town. Later, a National Diploma course at Cape Technikon provided him with the basics of business management and production procedure. Some of this knowledge was put to good use at Prosound, one of the largest concert system manufacturers in South Africa, and later, Manzoni - a respected audiovisual consultancy. Installations for which Gavin was responsible during this time included work for Southern Sun, Ster Kinekor, Gamesman Health & Racquet and Protea Hotels.

With the arrival of domestic computers in South Africa around 1983, Gavin delved into this exciting new medium with enthusiasm while continuing to pursue his other interests of photography and music.

In 1988, he started his own business called Protech Systems, allowing him to persue his interests of electronics, music and photography. He has engineered sound for bands like Celtic Rumours and Wendy Oldfield, produced photographic and video material for SFW, Ster-Kinekor and Diamond Fields Advertiser and supplied custom electronic designs to the advertising and entertainment industries.

In 1996, Gavin & Helen officially registered the business DDC cc, trading as Protech Systems and a partnership was formed, dealing exclusively in custom computer systems and consultation.

The experience of the past 18 years allows Gavin to provide clients with the knowledge and equipment they require - a precious commodity in this age of off-the-shelf mass production.

Helen started her exploration of computers in the field of programming. However, preferring to interact with people, she moved into software training.

Her knowledge of more than 20 office applications made her a perfect candidate for such divers corporate positions as UCS, Standard Bank Investment Brokers and The Community Chest where she gained a firm grounding in business procedure.

A qualified reflexologist, Helen was self employed in Johannesburg where she developed the confidence needed to run a small business. Her interest in alternative health research has led to the import and distribution of Hyperhealth, the world's first encyclopoedia of natural health on CD-ROM, by Protech Systems.

Helen's experience in marketing, public relations, software training and office administration all contribute toward making her an excellent office manager at Protech Systems.
